What Outsourced DevOps Actually Costs in 2026 (And Why We're Priced Differently)

If you’ve been quietly pricing out “outsourced DevOps” for your team, you’ve probably found two very different worlds: agencies quoting numbers that look like a full-time salary, and marketplaces offering an engineer for a few dollars an hour with no continuity. Neither is very useful if you just want your infrastructure to stop being a fire you fight alone.
Here’s what the market actually looks like right now, and where a small, direct retainer fits into it.
What Agencies Charge
UK-based managed DevOps agencies commonly quote around £4,000/month for ongoing managed services, with one-off projects — CI/CD setup, cloud migration, automation builds — running £30,000–£50,000. That’s not unreasonable for what it includes: a team, account management, and often 24/7 coverage across a large client base.
But it also means:
- You’re one of many accounts, not a priority relationship
- Your “engineer” may rotate between projects or even between people
- Response time is whatever the SLA tier you paid for allows
What Fractional / Marketplace DevOps Charges
On the other end, marketplace and fractional platforms advertise fractional DevOps engineers starting around $2,999/month for senior-level cloud/CI/CD work, with broader outsourced arrangements ranging from $490/month for small SaaS teams up to $5,000–$25,000/month for larger, 24/7-managed environments.
This can work well if you mainly need hours against a backlog. It’s less useful if you need someone who actually knows your infrastructure history — why a decision was made two years ago, what broke last time, what’s fragile.
Where a Flat Retainer Fits
Our own DevOps retainer starts at €700/month — no tiers to negotiate, no hourly banking, no account manager. What that gets you:
- Direct access to one senior engineer, not a rotating pool
- Infrastructure, pipelines, deployments, and incidents covered under one relationship
- No ticket queue — you email or call, and the person who answers is the person doing the work
It’s priced for SaaS and e-commerce teams of 1–10 developers who need senior-level DevOps judgment without a £4k/month agency relationship or a full-time hire that, at that stage, is usually overkill.
The Honest Trade-Off
A large agency gives you bench depth — if your engineer is unavailable, someone else picks it up. A solo or small-team retainer like ours gives you continuity and direct accountability, at the cost of that bench depth. For a small business whose infrastructure isn’t yet complex enough to need a whole team, that trade-off usually favours continuity: the same person who set up your monitoring is the one who gets paged when it fires.
